CHARACTER INTRODUCTIONS
~~~Meet our lovely freakshow of a cast~~~
L Cranston~ A young, spunky and outspoken detective, a protagonist in our story. She is seventeen years old and calls a small town near London home.
Lamount Cranston~ L's eighteen year old husband and partner in her line of work, another key character in this story of ours. He has been married to her for three years.
Solaris Delphine~ A wealthy fifteen year old girl living in a large mansion with her family just outside of London. She's very charismatic, and is able to make friends or allies with nearly everyone she meets. Recently, over the past few years, she's been ill. How curious.
Aaron Delphine~ A fifteen year old, handsome engineer who's heart had been captured by Solaris long ago. The two have known each other for nine years, and when he is with her that seems to keep away Solaris' sickness. Suspicious, isn't it?
Torren Rose~ Solaris' somewhat shady older sister. She is twenty-one years old. Nobody really knows what's going on in her mind, except for her equally-shady twin Char.
Charlotte Black~ Torren Rose's twin sister, Charlotte Black is a quiet, shy seeming character. But for quite a while she has had a bone to pick with Solaris, they both have many grudges to hold against each other. Could sickness be her fault? Who knows.
Blot Inkwell-Lament~ A trusted friend of L's,  Blot Inkwell-Lament truly is a shy, but very studious fifteen year old girl and can be counted on as a valid source of information. She is also a good friend to Solaris. She is very trustworthy... or is she hiding something?
Dimitri~ Another shady figure, but despite that he has gained Blot's trust and love. Not much is known about his past, except to him and a select few. He is sixteen years old.
Nickolas Inkwell-Lament~ Nickolas is Blot's "little brother", and like her he is rather shy and well-mannered. He couldn't hurt fly if he tried. Or could he? He's eleven years old and has been in love with Hattie Lester for three years.
Hattie Lester~ A shifty-seeming eleven year old working as a nurse and maid for the Delphines. She and Nickolas fell in love when they were ages seven and eight, and have been caught sleeping together once. She seems rather innocent and beautiful, but there's ought to be more to her than meets the eye.
Felicity Coxcomb~ A bright eighteen year old working as the Delphine's cook, Felicity 'Felix' Coxcomb seems as innocent as Hattie, but she also seems to have as many oppertunities as Hattie does to slip poison into their food or medicine. Is she as nice and optimistic as she seems to be?
Hermea Everglott~ Hermea Everglott, a sixteen year old girl who works as the Delphine's gardener, hates the INdoors. Can't stand 'em. That being as it is, she seems to be an unlikely culprit. Or is she?
Calamity Aurium~ Calamity Aurium is Solaris Delphine's energetic eight year old sister. She wouldn't have a reason to sabatoge Solaris. Besides how she finds Solaris' sickness just dreadfully boring, but I don't know how sabatoge would fix that.
Olga~ Olga is Dimitri's twin sister, and not much is known of her past either. She holds herself to very high standards and acts proper wherever she goes.
Caper Empty Chapter One: Emerging from a blanket of fog
Post by liz Tue Dec 31, 2013 4:12 am
A dark carriage arrives in front of a grand, brightly-lit mansion.
I step out the side and glance at Lamount, who got out after me. “Are you sure this is the right place?”
“Yes, this is the house they said to come to...”My husband says, looking at me and smiling. I sigh and we walk quickly towards to entrance, the sky was looking overcast and I didn’t wish to be stuck in the rain.
When we walk closer, I’m stunned by how fancy and expensive the place seems. We climb up the steps and I can’t help but gawk at the garden and how well kept it was. When we reach the door Lamount knocks. The door is opened for us by a girl with fiery red hair, tied up in a complicated looking hairdo involving loads of braids and curls. She has on a red and cream colored gown. She rolls her bright red eyes and calls out to someone behind her “Aaron, there’s more people here to see you...”A ginger-haired boy rushes down to the door, and actually lets us in, unlike the girl.
“Welcome, I’m so glad you could come.” Aaron says, closing the door behind us. “I apologize for how rude Olga can be.”
“...You must be very accomplished...” I say, my eyes darting around the interior of the house. He laughs.
“Yes, that is true...” He says, noticing my interest in the decor. He smiles. “Please, take off your coats.” We do as he says, and a young girl with white hair, maybe eleven, comes to take them. “Oh! I almost forgot! Your room is upstairs, we thought you two wouldn’t mind sharing a room, you are a married couple after all... well, like I was saying, upstairs and to the right. I’ll let you get settled in. Dinner will be at 9.” He says and promptly leaves. I turn and look at Lamount.
“Well... this might even be fun.” I say, still looking around. “I mean, look at the place. Working and temporarily LIVING here? I mean, I love our house, but I wouldn’t exactly expect a place like this to belong to fifteen year olds. Not even inventors and entrepreneurs like the Delphines. And they have WORKERS. You have to admire that they’ve made it this far at that age.” He smiles and nods.
“Yes, it is quite impressive...” He says and kisses me on the cheek. I blush and smile.
“I guess we should find our room and leave our things there, according to Aaron dinner’s in thirty minutes.” I say, glancing at a grandfather clock. I start walking.
Our room turns out to be fairly big, and dark colored. The same girl with white hair helps us carry up our things. She has bangs that cover her eyes, which unnerves me. Eyes, on a human or human-esqe creature, express a lot of what the person is thinking or feeling. I don’t feel as if I can trust her with her eyes like that, I can’t see them, they may or may not be giving major clues to me about her personality and ideas. I look at Lamount as she leaves.
“I don’t like her.” I say and start unpacking.
“Why not?” My husband asks, even though he already knows my answer.
“I don’t like the way she has her hair, it’s like she’s trying to hide something from me. Also, she doesn’t ever SPEAK. It’s like she’s trying to cover something up she doesn’t want us to see.” I say, putting my clothes away in drawers. He nods, understanding my distrust of people like that.
“True, she does seem shifty like that... but you jump to conclusions, sometimes, thinking like that. She might have a nasty scar she doesn’t want people to see, and she might be mute.” He counters, unpacking his things as well.
“Maybe...”I say and finish unpacking clothes, and begin putting away my books and other things. I look up when I’m done. 8:50 PM. “Dinner in ten minutes.” I find my hand mirror and I check my makeup. I set the mirror down and look at Lamount. “I think I’m going to go look around...”
“I’ll come with you.” He says, and I smile. We walk out of our bedroom and I shut the door behind us. I look around the hallway and down the stairs, then I begin walking.
Caper Empty Chapter Two: Dinner
Post by liz Tue Jan 28, 2014 2:05 am
I smile and walk down the stairs, looking around casually. I’m not perfectly at ease yet, but I am adjusting more by the second. Lamount follows close behind me, and I look at him. “I’m going to go head over to the dining room seven minutes early.” He says, and I nod.
“I hope you don’t mind if I explore this mansion, then.” I reply.
“No, not at all.” He says back and I smile. We walk down the grand stairs and step into the first floor, where we entered earlier. He smiles and nods at me, then heads toward the dining room. When he’s gone and I’m seemingly alone, I start looking for a way downstairs, where I know the worker’s rooms and the kitchen are located. It’s not like I’m going to spy on them or snoop through their things, I’m only curious. I check around corners and I see if panels open up. Eventually I find a door, designed to look like another panel in the wall. It has a doorknob, though, which I turn and open. I find myself in the entry to a stairway, the floor tiled and the walls white. It was nothing like the grand décor and craftsmanship just upstairs. I walk down the tiled stairs, my boots clicking on the surface, and when I reach the bottom I look around. It’s a hallway, with what appears to be the doors to the worker’s private quarters and on the other end the kitchen. I stroll to the quieter end of the hallway, away from the kitchen. In the kitchen they were surely busy preparing the food for our dinner. I get to the end of the hallway, doors to separate rooms on both sides. I think it’s nice how everyone got their own room, nobody was crammed together. It was generous of the Delphine family. One door is left open a crack and I can see the inside. There were lamps on the walls, a bed with a nightstand and there were also drawers where someone could keep their clothing and personal items. The room wasn’t empty of people, though. The white haired girl is in the corner, with her a boy her age with black hair. Judging by his looks he wasn’t a worker like her, but instead one of the guests invited here besides us. He’s holding her close to him and she smiles. Her hair still covers her eyes. I scowl. If she is having an affair with him then she might as well show him her eyes, gain his trust. Then I hear them start talking.
“I haven’t seen you in a while now, baby...” the girl’s voice echoes. Her voice turns out to be smooth and pretty-sounding, containing no hostility at all towards him. I’ve expected something quite different.
“I missed you when I was away, dear.” He replies in turn. The two of them seem very... affectionate, that’s the word, towards each other. I walk away just as their lips touch. I continue to the stairs, which I run up quickly, for fear I’ll be late for dinner.
I walk in the dining room on time. Lamount had kept a seat open for me, I smile and sit down next to him. I scan over the crowd quickly. There was an open seat to my right, and a girl sits down there in a few seconds. The red haired girl! Olga, wasn’t she? Next to her sat a boy, her age, with black hair and dark blue eyes. And next to him was a girl with black hair and deep orange-pink... Blot! A good friend of mine, as well as a young novelist, it’s a pleasant surprise to see her. She wrote under the pen name Seshat Vale and has a few published books out there with a medium amount of publicity. Seshat has a small but die-hard group of fans, including me. Like I said, it’s nice seeing her again. There is an open seat next to her, and next to the open seat sat Aaron, who is probably just sitting there to be nice, and afterwards he’s probably going to go eat with his love, Sol. On his other side was another open one, probably reserved for her. Two black-haired girls sat next to that seat, Sol’s older sisters no doubt, then another empty seat, then Lamount and me. We sat at the circular table waiting for our host to say something. A young girl with short golden hair sits in the empty seat next to Sol’s sisters. Blot looks a bit worried, chewing on her thumbnail. I had spent enough time around her to know that was a tell of hers. For example, Blot’s voice wavers after or when she’s crying, she chews her thumbnail when she’s worried, and her eyes dart around when she lies. A few seconds after I notice that a young boy comes in and takes the seat next to her. It was the boy I saw, the one that was in love with the white-haired girl. Seeing him from the front it was very clear he was related to Blot in some way. They had the same eyes. I sigh and wait for someone to say something.
Apparently the gold-haired girl decides to be the first to speak, when the white-haired girl in addition to two others begin carrying out our meal.
“CHEESE!” she yelps, and reaches out to a plate set relatively near her, that was indeed stacked with cheddar cheese... this place seems to get curiouser by the minute. This causes laughter from some, and odd looks from others. I was part of the latter, utterly confused by the girl’s obsession. Aaron smirks at her.
“Yes, there is cheese, Calamity, but remember what we do when we have guests?” He asks, sternly.
“No, not at all.” The girl, Calamity, says. She was obviously trying to annoy him like I used to do to my parents. I mean, when I had parents.
“We wait to eat until all the food is on the table.” He says, then lightens up and turns his attention to the rest of us. “Good evening! I’m so glad you all could come. It’s such a pleasure to have all of you as guests.”
“The pleasure is all ours.” Blot says politely. Aaron nods.
“I’m very sorry Sol couldn’t be down here to eat with us. She’s been doing rather poor lately, and by that I mean worse than usual. I’ll be going up to stay with her after I greet you all.” He says. Just as I thought. Sol and Aaron had known each other since they were six years old. They befriended each other quickly and soon became nearly inseparable. Those two had been through a lot of hard times together. I can’t help but pity them.
My attention shifts to Calamity, who has started eating the cheese rather quickly. All the plates were out, I guess. One of Sol’s older sisters swipes at her hand gently and shushes her. I look back to Blot. She’s looking at the boy again, and I can tell by the look in her eyes that she’s a bit angry with him. I wonder I she knows about him and the worker girl. I’d have to discuss that with her later. Anyways, she does NOT seem happy about him being late. Blot notices me and smiles, and I smile back. I then shift my attention away from her as to not be rude. The other boy next to Blot must be her lover Dimitri. She didn’t like going anywhere without him; he was absolutely everything to her. As to who exactly Olga is, I don’t know. She and Dimitri have quite a resemblance to each other. Maybe relatives? I can’t be sure. Aaron speaks again.
“Go on, dig in!”
Caper Empty Chapter Three: The Afterparty
Post by liz Thu Mar 13, 2014 10:22 am
When our meal is finished I stand up and smile at everyone. Once everyone was beginning to stand up and scatter I could see what everyone was wearing. Olga wore the same red and cream dress. Blot wore a long sleeved, rather tight fit black dress and an orange-pink flower in her hair. Sol’s older sisters both wore black as well, but nothing very showy. The little sister, Calamity, wore a plain dark brown dress but a contrasting gold necklace. Most of the men wore dressy black clothing. As for me? I wore a dark gray dress with a jade and amethyst necklace. When she seemed to be alone, I walk over to Blot.
“Liza!!!” She exclaims, then hugs me.
“Hello, Blot! Long time no see!” I say, hugging back.
“Talk about it! So, you’ve been invited here as well?” She asks.
“Yeah. How long ago did you get here?”
“Maybe a few hours. You?”
“Maybe forty minutes.” I say, laughing. “How’s your family?”
“We’re all well... Dimitri and his sister Olga are still jumpy but they seem to enjoy it here. I like it, and so does my little brother Nickolas.” She says, smiling. “You haven’t met my little brother, have you?”
“No, but I’ve seen him. You know he was late for dinner because there’s a worker girl downstairs he was visiting... they were very passionate...”I say, frowning slightly. But that’s who Olga was! I’m glad to finally know.
“Oh! You must mean Hattie. There’s a rather long story behind those two, do you want to hear it?” She asks.
“Of course.” I say, taking a seat on a chair in what was apparently the parlor, where everyone was talking and gossiping. But Blot’s little brother, Nickolas, wasn’t. Probably went back down to see ‘Hattie’ again.
“Back when he was eight, he lived in France and so did she. The two of them met and fell in love instantly. After a year or so they were married.” She says, sitting down next to me.
“Wait. So they were nine years old, and they got married?” I ask, quizzically.
“In secret, yes. After about three months my family and I had to move back to Italy. After a year living in Italy without her, Nickolas asked me if we could go visit Hattie. I said yes, because I missed her too. She was a very close family friend. When we got to France, she wasn’t there. Her father had sent her away to work for the Delphines along with her cousin, Hermea. Nickolas was just heartbroken when he found out. But now, since they’re both here, it’s just like it used to be.” She finishes.
“What was her maiden name?” I ask.
“Hattie Natali Lester. But now she’s Hattie Natali Inkwell-Lament. Why’d you ask?”
“Just curious.” I reply.
“Of course, of course. How’s your family?” She asks.
“We’re excellent, thank you.” I say smiling.
“Well, nice catching up with you!”
“Likewise!” I say as she stands up and walks over to Dimitri. So that’s who they were. I stand up and walk over to one of Sol’s sisters.
“Hello...” The short haired girl says.
“Hello. You are?” I reply and ask.
“Torren Rose. You?”
“L. But my close friends have a different name for me.”
“Oh? What is that?”
“It’s a name reserved for close friends. What are Sol’s other sisters’ names?”
“Me, Charlotte, Calamity, and two others we’ve never met. She has a cousin named Desdemona, and nieces named Monique, Terra, and Lydia.”
“Why doesn’t she know their names? Has she ever met them?”
“No, none of us have. They were pen pals of hers for quite a while. Sol had the time and money to do some legal searching, and she found they were related... but she does know their names, I’ve just forgotten. And, no, you cannot go visit Sol. She needs her rest.” She adds, almost reading my mind. Freaky.
“Well... nice meeting you...” I say slowly and walk away, to go find my husband, or at least someone to talk to. I hear music coming from a room upstairs. I drift away from the crowd unnoticed. I soon realize the music was coming from a third floor room. I only knew how to get to the second and underground floors. I mean, and the ground level. I’d find a way, though.
After a few minutes, I successfully locate a second stairway. I find that the music is coming from a tower annex, which I walk up to. Inside is Sol’s other sister and four young children. I recognize Calamity as one of them. The other three were significantly younger, and all three had black hair. Probably Sol’s nieces. Sol’s sister is watching and playing with the children quietly. She’s singing quietly, and she’s paying careful attention to the youngest one. The sister, who had to be Charlotte, looks up all the sudden.
“Hello,” she says warmly. “I’m Charlotte. Can I help you?”
“No, I’m sorry to interrupt. I’m L. I just heard music, so I decided to check it out... I’ll leave now.” I say, turning away.
“Please don’t go,” Charlotte says. “I like having company. I mean, other than Torren or the children. Please, come have a seat.”
“Are any of them yours?” I ask as I sit down next to her on the floor, watching the kids play.
“Yes, Lydia.” Char says, nodding. She picks up the youngest girl, who had black hair and brown eyes. “She’s only three years, and she’s my pride and joy. Her father left us when she was an infant. She’s all I have left of him.”
“Oh... that must have been very painful for you.” I say and sigh.
“Mommy...” Lydia says and giggles. Char smiles and laughs quietly.
“Lydia, we should really get you to sleep now...” Char says, and Lydia scrunches up her face.
“I’m not tired, mommy!” Lydia says and giggles again.
“I’ll get your brother to come and get you...” Char says, and then looks at the two other young girls. “Terra, Monique, you’re not off the hook either!” Char says and smiles. She lets go of her daughter and turns back to me. “Yeah, it was really hard. I’d been through so much bad stuff in my childhood, and then I met Lydia’s father when I was about nine. We began dating when I was sixteen. My life felt perfect. We adopted our first child. And then Lydia came along, one of our own, and things felt as if they’d never been better. Then he left us three, without really explaining where he was going or if he’d ever come back...” She says, sighing as she finishes.
“I can’t imagine how sad you are...”I say and sigh.
“Well, like you heard me say, I’ve really out to get the kids to bed. Talk to you again sometime?” She asks, sanding up.
“Yeah! Of course!” I say, smiling and standing as well. “Bye!”
“Bye.” She says as I leave. I head straight to my bedroom. It’s been a long day.
Lydia Black~ Charlotte’s three-year-old biological daughter. Lydia is rather bubbly and funny, despite her young age. She’s innocent and adorable. She is also Sol’s niece.
James Black~ Charlotte’s husband and Lydia’s father. He’s rather callous and introverted, avoiding large crowds. He’s been missing for years and nobody knows where he is... or is someone keeping his location secret for him?
Arica Black~ Charlotte’s adopted son and Lydia’s brother. Arica is very kind and often helps Charlotte watch Lydia and the other children. But, he often disappears for days at a time. Where could he be going?
Terra and Monique Black~ Torren’s twin four-year-olds. They’re quiet and introverted. They spend most of their time with Char, as Char usually watches the younger residents of the Delphine Mansion.
Antonio Culvert~ A close friend of Solaris’s, Antonio is a twenty year old writer and editor. He’s kind, optimistic, and outgoing. He’s been in love with his fiancée Shauna for four years.
Shauna Culvert~ Also a close friend of Sol and Aaron’s. She’s fifteen years old and is engaged to Antonio. She’s bubbly and happy... once she gets to know you. She’s rather shy until she befriends someone. However, she has a very charismatic and charming personality.
Data~ Shauna’s older sister, Data is not a human. Instead, she is a nineteen year old Automaton, which is a figure, usually a human, made of metal and has clockwork inside, allowing it to operate. Think early robot. Data can act and think like a real human, with a nice yet cautious personality.
Caper Empty Chapter Four: Bread and Butter
Post by liz Sat Apr 26, 2014 2:43 pm
((Please note Chapter Four is narrated by Hattie, not Liza. To prevent confusion. It is also the longest chapter in any of my stories yet!))
I wake up and smile. Having Nickolas back... damn. It was amazing. Only a few people could know about our love though. And that mean we spent most of our time separated, he staying with his class and I staying with mine. I knew, that I was truly part of his class, being meant to work as a lower class because of my lineage. Because of our marriage, however, I was just as good as the rest of them. But having to keep our love secret, which was the hard part. When he came back yesterday I was absolutely overjoyed. We had to keep the secret, only disclosed to my family as well as his. Nickolas had to leave a month or so after we wed. My father wouldn’t let me go with him, and I tried to run away to Italy. Being without my love just tore me apart. My father took this as a sign of rebellion, and so he sent me off to work. He also sent Hermea, my cousin, with to keep an eye on me. I wrote Nick letters and secretly sent them all the time. He never wrote back. I thought he hated me or had moved on. But my husband and his family, no, my family were visiting now. And it turned out they’d just gotten lost in the mail. I have my love back. But it’s just for a short while...
Nickolas and I were contemplating exposing my rank last night. We’d do it sometime at the end of the visit, still keeping our love secret for a while more. There was something risky, something adventurous about it. A daring edge we both like. I keep smiling to myself as I think about what it would be like. Exploiting the secret in front of others. Getting to stay with him and live with him and sleep with him and laugh with him, and just have him back... oh hell! I think as my eye catches sight of a clock. It’s almost five AM!
I jump out of bed, pick out one of my nicer dresses and change out of my nightclothes. It only takes me a few minutes, so I take the time to braid my hair nicely and apply a little bit of makeup. I wore a dress with long sleeves on purpose, since the mid-December wind was harsh and cold. That’s what the others would think. I was also wearing it to cover my wrist, on which I wore a diamond and pearl bracelet, a recent present from Nickolas. He’d given it to me last night, actually. He and my sister in law had lavished me with presents, just to make me feel better ad remind me how much they love me and how sorry they were for having to leave me behind. I know I’m lucky to be loved. Some people here aren’t...
They’d also given me the makeup I’m using. I make sure to only apply a bit, just so nobody can tell. Keep the secret. My favorite was(and is) a new dress. It’s fancier than any of my old dresses and look like it should be worn by someone of high status. And it will be. I’m saving it for Christmas Eve, however. That’s when my love and I are going to tell them. Then we can have a happily ever after. Together forever. I stroke the bracelet, smiling and thinking of how soft his touch was, and how much I had missed it. I hear a loud bang at my door, which jolts me out of my daydream state.
“Hattie! You up in there?” A loud, somewhat angry voice yells from the other side. I recognized the voice instantly. Felicity. She was a cook here, and we had all silently voted her into the position of leader.
“Yes, yes, I’m awake!” I yell back, quickly tying a ribbon from one of the gift around the end of my braid. I make sure my bangs covered up my eyes, especially the scar I had on the right. My father had beat me for running away before he sent me here. Old memories, one I’d rather forget. I was way, way late to get up.
“Then get out here! There’s a million things to do and we need your help!” She barks. I smooth my dress as I rush out of my room. The purple-haired, lime-green-eyed 18 year old looks up and down me. She raises an eyebrow. “Certainly dressed nicely, aren’t you? Took a little time getting up today, eh?”
I blush and nod, “Well, yes. We have company over and are not just serving the Delphine family today. We should at least try to look our best, no?” and she nods in agreement to my thought process.
“Atta girl. Now, lots of people here. More rooms needed. We need help pitching coal into the furnace to heat the extra space. You’re open, for now. You can do your usual chores later.” She continues with a smirk. She often failed at hiding her true colours, she was actually very nice.
“Wha... what? That’s men’s work! I can’t do that!” I yelp, flustered. My job was to take care of Miss Delphine in her illness, be the maid(cleaning), and as of now help guests who need help. Felicity knows that I, in particular, am not a very strong girl. She liked to test us sometimes, and I usually failed.
“So?” She asks. “We need help. Help is your job.” She says just as one of the service needed buzzers rang. There was a communication system rigged throughout the mansion. A guest or resident here would press a button in their room when assistance was needed. A buzzer would go of down here and an arrow would point to the room number service was requested in. Only the staff knew the actual numbers. To guests, the rooms were just rooms. The number which had rang quickly translated to its room in my mind and I smile. Felicity scowls. “All right, you can take this call first. But I want you back down here soon as possible.”
I run up the stairs. And more stairs. To the top floor. Not the annex, just the top. Not the attic, just the top.
Finally I slow down as I come to Nick’s room. He had been the one who called. I really had no idea why he was up so early, but I had no doubt that the only reason he pressed that button was to get me to come up here and see him. Say good morning, maybe get a kiss or two. I missed that sense of humor. I knock on the door and wait for him to open it. “Hello?” I call from the outside. He opens the door a few seconds after I knocked.
“Morning, lovely,” He says, smiling, as he invites me in. I blush and I look at him. He starts to blush too, and I can’t help but laugh. He laughs with me. Things felt different, things felt new, things felt like they used to when we were younger. Two eight year old children, living in Paris, without a care in the world. Now we were eleven, married, and managing our own lives and differences. Same but different.
“Good morning.” I say in return with a smile. I sigh happily and shut the door behind us. I lock it even. No one could know about us. No one. I’m wearing a simple, yet somewhat fancy navy blue dress. He wears a white dress shirt with black pants. I smile, and quickly hug him. He wraps his arms around me and holds me close. I melt in his warmth and relax, just standing there with him, no time, no job, just us. After a minute or so we let go of each other. He looks at me with a smile.
“You look beautiful today,” He whispers to me, and I blush.
“Thank you...” I say, then look him in the eyes for a second, then close my eyes as I kiss him. He kisses back for a few seconds, then we break away from each other.
“Hattie?”
“Yes?”
“Can you just stay here? Make up an excuse for taking forever to help me? I want keep you this close as long as I can.” He whispers to me.
“Sorry baby, I‘m supposed to help pitch coal and help with your breakfast along with my normal responsibilities. I got out of helping this early just because you called. Thank you for that, by the way.” I answer quickly. He nods understandingly. He, out of habit from when we were young, reaches to my face to brush my bangs out of my eyes. I grab his hand instinctively before he can do so though. I’d told him the story of the scar, but not shown him it. It was one of the less pretty parts of me.
“Oh, sorry...” He says as he moves his hand away.
“It’s alright.” I say as I lean in for another kiss.
After what felt like a few minutes of quietly chatting, laughing, and romance with Nickolas, I catch sight of the clock in his room. Fifteen whole minutes had passed since I arrived. Felicity would be rather angry with me now.
“Aww, baby, I really have to go!” I say, and let go of him.
“Can you come back?” He asks.
“Yeah. Hopefully.” I say with a slight smile.
“Well, if not, I’ll be ringing that service bell every five minutes.” He says and I laugh. I wave goodbye to him as I unlock the door and leave. These small moments together were all we got for alone time, time to be together. In front of people we were often separated from each other, which saddens us.
I hurry back downstairs. Felicity was standing there, waiting. She’s NOT happy. She has her arms crossed, fingers tapping impatiently. “Hattie? I told you to be back down here as soon as possible. Not to stop and smell the roses!”
“I’m sorry, miss, but this is as soon as possible. The boy I went to help was having some complex problems, but I helped him work them out. He’ll be fine now. I’m ready to help.” I reply quickly, trying to be calm and disguise how grateful I am for that little bit of time I had as a break with Nickolas.
“Then, you know where the boilers are. Go ahead.” She says and nudges me forward a little bit. I sigh quietly and run off to the boiler room.
